Paul MERCURIO (Hastings) (14:34): (1762) My constituency question is to the Minister for Government Services in the other place. During the many doorknocks, phone calls and street stalls I have done since the rego rebate offer came out, many people have expressed their thanks and relief regarding getting some money back in their bank accounts to assist with the cost of living. A question often asked when I am out and about is how many people in the electorate have taken up this offer and how much money has been given back. So my question to the minister is: please tell me how much money the rebate has actually put back into the pockets of those community members in our electorates who have applied. I do know that in the first 24 hours over 600,000 people across Victoria applied for and received their rebate, and the total number of people to date is well over 3 million. And to those cynical people who think the rego rebate is just for votes, I say these three words: power saving bonus.
