Natalie SULEYMAN (St Albans – Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Minister for Small and Family Business, Minister for Veterans) (14:15): I rise to update the house on how the Carroll Labor government is making local shopping strips safer – safer for community and safer for business. The tragic death of Van Viet Truong has shaken us all, and soon after the incident last week I, the Premier, the Minister for Police and the member for Laverton paid our respects and met with local traders on Hampshire Road in Sunshine. The community made it clear that they want action, and today the Carroll Labor government has delivered, giving Victoria Police additional resources to fight crime and keep our shopping strips safe. We will recruit an additional 150 protective services officers, taking the number to 200, and PSOs will be patrolling our main streets, with the powers to make a real difference. This morning I started the day with local traders in St Albans, talking to them about today’s announcement, and let me say this is welcome news for the business community. They want to see Victoria Police and PSOs out at the shopping strips, at shopping centres and wherever they are needed most. We know that there is more to do, and only a Carroll Labor government will deliver real action on community safety, unlike those opposite, who will form a coalition of cuts with One Nation.
