Paul HAMER (Box Hill – Minister for Roads and Road Safety) (10:05): Over $200 million is the figure which was revealed in the Legislative Council to acquire and remediate the privately owned Box Hill brickworks site – a site which the owner does not want to sell and has not allowed any independent environmental assessments of. I have been raising the future of the Box Hill brickworks site with ministers for several years and have previously called for more open space at this site, but not at any cost or any risk. With an owner who is neither willing to sell nor willing to allow independent inspections to take place, compulsory acquisition of the land would leave a new owner liable for every unknown risk associated with the site. Whitehorse council has recently offered to purchase the site, and I welcome this significant investment in the Box Hill community. Over the years Whitehorse council has accumulated over $70 million from residential development through its open space development levy. My door is always open to the council to discuss how this funding can be leveraged to negotiate the best possible open space outcome for the community as part of the master plan for the site. Unlike the Liberals, who peddle false hope with their unfunded dreams, we are delivering more open space for the Box Hill community, including new parks in Ellingworth Parade, between Court and Watts streets and in Victoria Crescent, as well as a new linear park in Whitehorse Road.
