Minister, what is being done to address the concerning and growing problem of deer across the district of Monbulk? There are fewer things more frightening than driving along our winding roads in the twilight or dark and coming across a large male sambar deer in the middle of the road and slamming on your brakes to avoid a collision, or actually colliding with one. They are a road hazard, and the environmental damage that deer wreak is truly terrible. They can change habitat, spread diseases, pathogens and weed seeds and affect water quality. They damage soils through erosion and compaction. They may also even change plant communities through selective browsing. They threaten the habitat of many of the native fauna across the Dandenong Ranges, including the critically endangered helmeted honeyeater. For our growers in the agricultural sector, deer impact their product, trampling and/or eating whatever takes their fancy. They are a menace, and we need to do more to address their growing population. I look forward to the minister’s response.
