Nick STAIKOS (Bentleigh – Minister for Housing, Building and Precincts, Minister for Homelessness, Minister for Seniors) (10:02): I take the opportunity in the house today to congratulate St Peters Football Club on its 70th anniversary. In 1956 St Peters parish priest Father Fred McKenna identified the need for a footy team to be started at St Peter’s Primary School, and so it began. The club went from strength to strength, and it won its first premiership in 1964. There have been a number of famous names to have come out of St Peters, none more so than the Beveridge family. Luke Beveridge, of course, is the coach of the Western Bulldogs. His late dad John was a recruiter for St Kilda, selecting legends like Nick Riewoldt, and the matriarch of the family, Rosa Beveridge, in addition to serving the club was also a councillor at the City of Moorabbin, serving a term as deputy mayor as well. Another councillor of Moorabbin and a friend of Rosa’s was Julie Cooper. Julie was the first woman councillor and mayor of Moorabbin, and someone who contributed greatly to Centenary Park, where the club is based. Her name for many years has adorned the pavilion. But when Glen Eira council demolished the old pavilion, they had indicated that they would not be reinstating Julie’s name on the new pavilion. So I joined with Rosa and the club to convince council that Julie’s name must remain. Today the Julie Cooper pavilion continues to stand proudly at Centenary Park, a building that, while the current building is only 11 years old, holds 70 years of history of a club that in 2026 is stronger than ever.
