Steve DIMOPOULOS (Oakleigh – Minister for WorkSafe and the TAC, Minister for Sport, Minister for Equality) (10:29): I had the enormous pleasure of attending a couple of events last weekend in the Indian community of Oakleigh: Sankat Mochan and Sri Venkata Krishna Brundavana. As many of us would know, you see the best of community when they are assembling together for nothing of personal gain. Cultural performances, service, putting on a meal for other people – that is the epitome of the Indian community, whether they be Hindu or Sikh or any other denomination. They are incredible people. It reminded me, when I went to these community organisations and community groups the other day, that over the next couple of months leading up to the election we will see a lot of politicians and a lot of candidates doing different things, saying different things and taking happy snaps with Indian, Greek, Chinese background, Croatian or any other of the 190 nationalities we have in this beautiful state. They will be taking happy snaps for Facebook and Instagram but saying something very different in the corridors of power. I said to these beautiful Indian Australians, ‘You will have a lot of people promising many things, but I can tell you one thing: you never, ever have to doubt the Labor government’s commitment to you.’ We are always on the side of multicultural communities – always.
