Public transport
Matthew GUY (Bulleen) (17:24): (1811) Speaker, with your indulgence, I will just echo the words of the Leader of the National Party on your service and your announcement of your retirement today. We will miss you. I guess that those who are kicked out maybe will not, but when we get the time back in the chamber, we will be able to see you again. Thank you for your service, and good luck.
My adjournment matter tonight is for the Minister for Public Transport. I ask the minister to implement a campaign of respectful behaviour across our public transport network. I raise this matter and ask the minister to implement this campaign with the operators, particularly Yarra Trams and Metro Trains, in relation to a number of conversations and emails I have had from commuters right across the metropolitan network, particularly on the tram network in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, who have raised issues in relation to people using speakers, for instance, on trams and being quite disruptive on the public transport network. I think it is important that when we take public transport – I take the train, the tram and sometimes the bus to Parliament all the time – we are considerate about other passengers and that respectful behaviour is in people’s minds when they are using public transport. I think it is important to have campaigns which are managed and put in place by the operators and led by the minister to ensure that this is known and that passengers know that we should be courteous to other people around us on public transport. So I ask the minister to implement a campaign around respect and respectful behaviour on our public transport network, focusing particularly on the tram and train networks.
