Women in sport

Melissa HORNE (Williamstown – Minister for Ports and Freight, Minister for Jobs, Minister for Industry and Advanced Manufacturing, Minister for Defence Industry) (09:53): It has been a great few weeks for women in sport in my electorate. The Newport Power Netball Club recently announced that two players from their under-17 Vixens team have been selected for the state’s top 25 under-17s squad. Congratulations to Amelie Connelly and Mieke Pretorius. It was also really exciting to see the under-14 Altona Junior Football Club girls and the under-16 Williamstown Juniors Football Club girls both take wins in the 2026 premiership grand finals just last weekend at Donald McLean Reserve – thanks to Spotswood football club for hosting. This weekend the Williamstown Football Club’s women will close out the season, and a win will take them to the premiership. Good luck, women. Not so long ago girls who wanted to play sports often had no opportunity to grow. Now we have clubs and leagues – and grand finals – that our young girls represent. These spaces matter because they teach girls that they belong on the field, that they can be strong and competitive and that they can take up space without apology.
