Constituency questions

Monbulk electorate

Daniela DE MARTINO

Monbulk electorate

Daniela DE MARTINO (Monbulk) (14:32): (1791) My question is for the Minister for Environment. How will the minister respond to the calls from Yarra Ranges council and other advocates for kangaroos to remove this local government area, which includes the Dandenong Ranges, within my electorate of Monbulk, from the kangaroo harvesting program? Yarra Ranges is the only peri-urban LGA which is included in this program. It is an area renowned for its rich natural environment and unique wildlife. Kangaroos are an iconic part of this landscape, valued by residents and visitors alike. Increasingly, community members are expressing concern about the impact of commercial harvesting in areas close to homes, recreation spaces and wildlife corridors. They are concerned about animal welfare outcomes and the effect harvesting can have on local mob structures and the broader ecosystem. The Yarra Ranges community has a strong commitment to conservation and coexistence with native wildlife, and decisions affecting kangaroos should reflect community expectations, local environmental values and the importance of protecting Victoria’s indigenous species for future generations. I look forward to the minister’s response.
