Community safety

Luba GRIGOROVITCH (Kororoit – Minister for Youth, Minister for Carers and Volunteers) (09:59): As we know, crime and public safety are a growing concern, and the Carroll Labor government is taking real action to ensure that people feel safe in our community. Operation Pulse has put PSO patrols in shopping centres across Victoria. The results have been promising. Watergardens shopping centre, a major centre near my electorate, has seen a 73 per cent decrease in retail theft and a 50 per cent decrease in violent behaviour, and 84 per cent of people tell us that they feel safe in centres with PSOs around. Those figures are good news for shoppers and good news for local businesses. I will continue to advocate for expanding this to more places where safety is a concern. Based on expert advice, we are also recruiting an additional 200 police reservists to allow stations to be open longer and free up more frontline officers to be out on the beat. Labor’s strong, practical action on crime contrasts with that of the Liberal–One Nation coalition, who like to talk a big game but use dodgy accounting to claim that they will spend more on fighting crime while also cutting $40 billion out of services to reduce it. This Labor government, the Carroll Labor government, is serious about fighting crime, and I will continue to push the government to do more to make our state a safer place to live, to work and to invest.
