Richard O’Toole

David HODGETT (Croydon) (09:58): Today I rise to acknowledge the outstanding contribution Richard O’Toole has made to the Australian Youth Band during his 20-plus years as musical director. On Sunday I once again had the privilege of seeing the Australian Youth Band in concert, an event I have been fortunate to enjoy on several occasions over the years. Richard was appointed the musical director in February 2005, with a clear vision to raise the band’s profile in Melbourne, across Australia and on the international stage. Over 20 years later Richard has well and truly brought that vision to life. Under his direction the Australian Youth Band has built a strong international reputation, earning regular invitations to perform at festivals around the world. Its high standard of performance, professionalism and musicianship is a testament to Richard’s energy, dedication and leadership.

Alongside his work with the band, Richard is also the instrumental music director at Yarra Hills Secondary College, where he teaches clarinet, saxophone, voice and piano and directs the college’s ensembles. This year marks the final chapter of an extraordinary 45-year career in education, as he prepares to retire from teaching. Throughout his career Richard has made an enormous contribution to school and community music, inspiring generations of young musicians with his knowledge, enthusiasm and passion. As a teacher, conductor and musical director he has provided countless opportunities to perform, travel and be part of something special. Some of the standout highlights of Richard’s career have been the Australian Youth Band’s memorable performances in Shanghai and Penang, the Singapore Botanic Gardens concert and, most recently, its performances in Malaysia, where the band performed to an exceptional standard. I congratulate Richard on an extraordinary career in music and education.
