Suburban Rail Loop
Brad BATTIN (Berwick) (09:46): We all know that everyone in Victoria, including us, never likes a new tax. We all do not like a new tax, but what we especially do not like is a new secret tax, one that is sneakily put through that the community do not get told about to fund a project that we know that a government, maybe Labor, have actually decided to go through with when they know that it is going to be so over budget. They thought to themselves, ‘How are we going to get some more money out of this? How are we going to get the money out of the Victorian people? You know what we’ll do? We’ll go to the people in Warrnambool, who’ll probably never use suburban rail, and we’ll increase their train fares. We’ll cut their services as well, because we can probably save some money there. We’ll go up to the people in Shepparton and we’ll say to them, “We’re going to actually take some money off you as well. We’re going to get a little bit out of your pocket to put into the Suburban Rail Loop.”’ They are even coming out into areas in Casey and Cardinia and saying to them, ‘We’re going to take a bit of money out of your pocket.’ Up in Wyndham and all the areas that are not getting the electrified rail – the ones that are not getting the extensions on the things that have been promised in the future, like Mildura, which does not have it at all – they are having to pay now a new tax. What is worse is that the Deputy Premier came out today and said, ‘I didn’t speak about it, because I didn’t know it was a secret.’ How could you not know it was a secret? The Premier of this state signed off on a new tax –
John Pesutto: Because she only leaks.
Brad BATTIN: That is right. They signed off on a new tax to make sure that Victorians had to pay more, but the only thing she forgot to sign was the media release, and let us be honest, Labor is best at media releases to hide things.
