Constituency questions

Mildura electorate

Jade BENHAM

Mildura electorate

Jade BENHAM (Mildura) (14:31): (1790) My urgent constituency question is to the Minister for Children in the other place and comes from the community of Hopetoun. What is the government’s solution to the escalating early years crisis facing Hopetoun families? Hopetoun has been without child care since April 2024. Just as Emerge Early Years had recruited staff and prepared to reopen the service, serious water, mould and structural damage forced the early years centre to close for potentially two years. Twenty-seven children are enrolled in kindergarten this year, while 15 families have expressed interest in child care. Kindergarten is now operating from the senior citizens building, which is not fit for purpose, not safe and displaces older residents as well. This temporary arrangement cannot accommodate the child care. The Department of Education has advised that no relocatable building is available and that a $2.5 million rebuild is just not justified – because country kids do not matter! Well, they do. They have offered funding to make the seniors building suitable for kindergarten services, but that displaces our seniors – it is robbing Peter to pay Paul. What is the solution?
