 Anthony CIANFLONE (Pascoe Vale) (14:29): (1801) My constituency question is for the Minister for Education. How will local high schools across Merri-bek continue to benefit from our Labor government’s ongoing investments to improve and support local schools, including Brunswick Secondary College? Brunswick Secondary College was originally opened in the early 1990s following the amalgamation of Brunswick Technical School, Brunswick Girls School, Brunswick East Secondary School and Brunswick High School, placing the school origins on the Dawson Street site well over 100 years ago. Over this time the school has proudly continued to provide local young people with a high-quality education and an increasingly vibrant and inclusive learning environment to prepare them for their life ahead. Now home to 1100 students and growing from over 50 cultural backgrounds and nationalities, Brunswick Secondary continues to empower students to aim for excellence both academically and socially while supporting them to aspire to succeed socially, academically, environmentally and artistically. However, given the area’s growth, ongoing investment will be needed to support the school. That is why I was pleased to visit on 1 September with Sheena Watt, a member in the other place, and meet Shane Gemmola, the acting principal, for a tour and update on the school’s work and priorities, which I look forward to Labor candidate for Brunswick Gabe Steger working with.
