 Katie HALL (Footscray) (13:16): I rise to express my serious concern regarding a shocking example of corporate arrogance in my electorate. The recent installation of 15-metre concrete poles through established residential streets in Yarraville and West Footscray by Jemena has been delivered with a complete disregard for residents. I was only made aware of the 15-metre concrete poles when distressed residents started contacting my office, not through any engagement from Jemena. Residents report they were given little opportunity to understand the scope of the works before construction began, only receiving perfunctory notifications of infrastructure upgrades and lengthy power outages. I have just received notification of another 10-hour outage on Sunday the 20th. Some residents were told the project involved upgrades to existing poles rather than the substantial new structures that followed.

I am also concerned about Jemena’s engagement with the City of Maribyrnong. Jemena advised me in writing that they had engaged with council and shared plans with no objection or comment received back. I have since been advised by council that this is incorrect. Infrastructure of this scale which permanently alters the character of established neighbourhoods should not proceed without meaningful engagement with affected communities and local government. On behalf of my constituents I am calling on Jemena to make this right. They should take out the infrastructure they have installed and put it underground.
