Peter WALSH (Murray Plains) (10:32): Bendigo has lost an outstanding community champion with the recent passing of Max Turner. Max’s passion, strength and drive for the Bendigo region has extended beyond his one term as a Liberal MP for Bendigo West in this place. The former carpenter, police detective and newsagent won the seat of Bendigo West in the Kennett government’s landslide victory of 1992. He used that time in office to be instrumental in the transforming of the former Bendigo rail yards into the marketplace and the Bendigo Discovery Science & Technology Centre. Max played a key role in enabling the transfer of the Bendigo livestock saleyards after their 130-year tenure in Charleston Road to the new facilities at Huntly. Post politics, Max has continued to champion issues on behalf of the Bendigo region for the last 30 years, including community advocacy for better flood mitigation along the Bendigo Creek through Epsom and Huntly and always keeping an eagle eye on the affairs of Greater Bendigo City Council, including challenging the cost to ratepayers of the council’s involvement in the GovHub project. To his wife of 60 years, Shirley, to his daughter Sharon and to the wider Turner family: thank you for sharing Max with us. A life of service well lived.
