Aiv PUGLIELLI (North-Eastern Metropolitan) (19:15): (2648) My adjournment today is to the Minister for WorkSafe and the TAC, and the action I seek is that they ensure that the final draft of the Code of Claimants’ Rights has meaningful and enforceable consequences for breaches. This process of the code is important, the code is important, but it must be written in a way which holds people to account. The code will set clear service standards for WorkSafe and its agents, including authorised agents, independent medical examiners, occupational rehabilitation providers and private investigators, but it cannot just be symbolic. There need to be tangible ways to hold people to account if and when there are breaches. My office hears from injured workers every single week, and I have to say, when you hear some of the stories, many of them are absolutely not being treated by WorkSafe and its agents with dignity or respect. This code must be enforceable. It must improve the way in which injured workers are treated as they seek support in their recovery and treatment. There need to be consequences for a failure to uphold this code, and I call on the minister to make sure that, once it is finalised, the code is strong and categorical in its expectations for the fair and empathetic treatment of injured workers.
