Ministers statements: Barwon and Grampians mental health services
Ingrid STITT (Western Metropolitan – Minister for Government Services, Special Minister of State, Minister for Ageing, Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria) (12:27): I rise to highlight the Labor government’s commitment to ensuring that a person’s postcode does not determine their access to mental health care. Through significant investments in the Barwon and Grampians regions the government is delivering a transformed mental health system, one that is community based, recovery focused and shaped by the voices of people with lived experience. In Barwon the opening of the Peer Healing Space marks a significant step forward in expanding peer-led mental health care. Led by Mind Australia, with support from Barwon Health and Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative, the service recognises the unique expertise of people with lived and living experience of mental ill health. It provides a welcoming, culturally safe space where peer workers draw on their own expertise to foster hope, connection and recovery. This innovative model demonstrates the government’s commitment to embedding lived experience leadership and delivering compassionate, person-centred mental health care that is shaped by the communities it serves. The Labor government is also delivering new youth prevention and recovery care centres in the Grampians and Barwon regions. These YPARCs will provide young people experiencing mental health challenges with short-term residential support in a therapeutic, community-based setting. They will offer an alternative to hospital admission, where appropriate, and support young people to recover while remaining connected to their families, education and local communities. These investments demonstrate the government’s ongoing commitment to implementing the recommendations of the royal commission. They reflect a vision for a system that is community based, recovery focused and available closer to where people live. Every Victorian, regardless of their postcode, deserves access to high-quality mental health care. These investments in the Grampians and Barwon regions are helping to make that vision a reality.
