Workplace safety
Michael GALEA (South-Eastern Metropolitan) (10:02): Retail provides a wonderful opportunity for young Victorians to get their first job, to earn some money and to learn the dignity of work, but that dignity can be undermined when a small number of customers decide to turn violent and abusive towards retail workers. That is why it was great to join this morning with proud former Kmart worker and now Premier of Victoria Ben Carroll at Kmart in the city to announce that the Labor government is today tabling in Parliament its new workplace protection order laws. It was also great to be there with new Deputy Premier Gabrielle Williams and indeed many figures and members from the union movement, including from the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, the Transport Workers’ Union and of course the SDA, with Michael Donovan there powerfully speaking up for and representing the interests of his members, as he has done so tenaciously on this issue for such a long period of time. It was wonderful to be there with so many SDA members, including with a former delegate of mine, Tammy. We spoke about the importance of what these new laws will mean for working Victorians in the retail and transport sectors. Workplace protection orders will play a very important role, building upon the reforms already implemented by the Labor government to toughen penalties for those who assault retail workers, by bringing in court-ordered ban notices for those who do seek to violently or repeatedly abuse retail workers and indeed transport workers. I very much look forward to having more to say on this when it comes into the upper house sometime soon.
