Rachel PAYNE (South-Eastern Metropolitan) (12:47): (2443) My question is for the Minister for Environment. My Seaford-based constituent volunteers with the Seaford Beach Patrol. She has raised concerns about the microplastic nurdles washing up on Seaford beach in their tens of thousands. My constituent has picked up all of these by hand on patrols monthly with the beach clean-up days. Nurdles are raw plastic resin pellets, smaller than 5 millimetres in diameter. They are either created to be melted down and made into plastic objects or a by-product of larger object manufacturing. These are a hazard to our marine life who ingest them, thinking that they are food. My constituent informs me that the Victorian EPA and the minister were provided with a report last year titled Microplastic Pollution in Melbourne’s Waterways: Existing Legal Solutions. So my question is: will the minister adopt the report’s recommendations to combat the microplastic issue, particularly on Seaford beach in my electorate?
