Richard WELCH

Chinese Cancer and Chronic Illness Society of Victoria

Richard WELCH (North-Eastern Metropolitan) (09:53): Cancer and chronic illness are difficult enough without patients also facing language barriers, cultural stigma and isolation. But for 30 years the Chinese Cancer and Chronic Illness Society of Victoria has helped Chinese-speaking Australians, patients and carers, meet these challenges with their own language among people who understand their experience. Founded in 1996 as a Cancer Council Victoria support group, it has grown from a monthly gathering to a trusted community network offering information, practical support, connection and hope. I was absolutely pleased to join with them and celebrate their monumental achievement at their 30th anniversary celebration and congratulate in particular the founder and stalwart president Dorothy Yiu and the volunteers, members and supporters. Their work means illness does not have to be faced alone and there are solutions in the community. They are a marvellous, marvellous group. I commend them deeply.
