Moira DEEMING (Western Metropolitan) (12:53): (2449) My question is for the Minister for Transport Infrastructure. The Labor government told us that the West Gate Tunnel Project would cost $400 million, but now we know that it has cost $4 billion. They told us that it would take 28,000 cars off the West Gate Bridge, and we know that it is taking less than half that number. They told us it would take 9000 trucks off local roads, but we know that the City of Melbourne has counted three times as many trucks avoiding the tolls and on local roads compared with the same period last year. We know that the automatic height clearance rates of 4.6 metres mean that the majority of B-double trucks cannot even use it anyway. The government signed a contract for Transurban to cover about $6 billion of costs, but recent analysis has suggested that they will make close to $40 billion off the deal. The question is: what is the point of this tunnel, and how much money is it going to give to Transurban compared to the benefits for Victorians?
