Family violence

Anasina GRAY-BARBERIO (Northern Metropolitan) (10:04): Yesterday the Minister for Prevention of Family Violence made a ministers statement about a woman being killed every 11 days in Australia and how women’s safety is important. This is the most vocal we have seen this minister be about Victorian women being killed at the hands of male violence. She is the fifth minister from this useless Labor government to take on this important portfolio since 2022. It is no wonder we are not seeing this crisis diminish. This government acts as if this job is done and that there is no more to do, beyond the Royal Commission into Family Violence, to save women and children. I pay tribute to Brooke Stephens from Clyde North, who died just over 24 hours ago, a mother allegedly killed by her partner, leaving behind young children who are waking up knowing that their mum will never come home; another Melburnian mum Lavanya Chappa, allegedly killed by male violence at the hands of her partner; and as we heard earlier today, Layla Jeffery, 13 years old. All this government care about are populist announcements. Why won’t you listen to victim-survivors, families and the sector – people that know the answers? You know what you need to do. It is not a policy gap that we have here; it is an implementation gap that we have from this government. It is a political choice to stand back and act as if your hands are tied. Enough with the virtue signalling. You pretend that you care about women, yet you will not put in the necessary investment and sustainable funding to fund the front lines, to fund early intervention and prevention and to fund housing for women and children, especially those escaping gender-based violence. Fund the organisations that are doing the work now.
