Jess WILSON (Kew – Leader of the Opposition) (09:40): Next month, right here in this very chamber, I will be excited to welcome the finalists of the Kew first speech competition. Students from 16 primary schools and seven secondary schools entered the competition, where they were asked to deliver a speech on an issue that matters most to them, much like a first speech here in the Parliament. I am very grateful to my colleagues in the other place David Davis and Georgie Crozier as well as the member for Hawthorn for helping judge the competition and choose the finalists, who will deliver their speeches here next month. I am looking forward to hearing from Ollie from Balwyn Primary, who spoke about Victoria’s debt; Kaylee from Fintona, who will be speaking about the importance of mental health; and Jarvis from St Anne’s and Ariya from St Bede’s, who will raise their concerns about crime in this state and feeling safe in their own communities. We will also hear from Ellie from Carey about housing affordability, Aathana from Camberwell Girls about the cost of living and Gabriel from Xavier about civics education. It is truly one of the best parts of my job – and I think I can say that for many people in this place – to hear from the next generation about what matters to them. I cannot wait to hear from and listen to these bright young students on what they have to say about the future of our state.
