Today is a great day. The EPA on Monday announced that they have revoked Barro Group’s operating licence for the Kealba landfill. This means that this landfill is permanently closed and closed for good. For years we have endured the smell and the frustration of having an industrial landfill right on our doorstep, with underground fires burning for years. I made a commitment that I would not stop until this landfill was closed for good, and I have consistently made strong representation, fighting every step of the way to EPA, and recently passed on the community petitions of hundreds of locals to the Minister for Environment Enver Erdogan at the landfill. I want to thank the minister for being there and visiting and seeing it firsthand. We have always known the truth: a commercial landfill had no business being this close to our homes, our schools and our local businesses. The Barro Group have behaved like cowboys with complete disregard for my local community. To every person who signed the petition, showed up, called my office, stood with me and never backed down: thank you very much. This site continues to be remediated. It is now up to Brimbank City Council and the Barro Group to ensure the future of this land.
