Martin CAMERON (Morwell) (09:52): My colleague and friend Jess Wilson received a rock star welcome in the Latrobe Valley last week in what was her 80th stop in the Fresh Start tour. We caught up with Dan Brewer, journalist at TRFM, and Gabi and Dan, whose popular breakfast show is broadcast out of Traralgon right across regional Victoria. We had a coffee with a group of regulars at Red Annex – thanks very much to Kate and Mitch for hosting us in Traralgon – and spoke about everything from land tax to payroll tax to how to have your scones. I took Jess to see firsthand the ever-present danger that is the Bank Street intersection in Traralgon, and she could not believe her eyes – or her ears, for that matter – when I took her through the sequence of excuses offered up by Labor over the past four years while we still have not got traffic lights. We met Katie and Rob, owners of Farnham Court Hotel, to hear about the disastrous impacts of Labor’s Commonwealth Games cancellation. Katie and Rob had just entered a $300,000 contract with teams Wales, England and Scotland to host their athletes, and the very next morning the event was scrapped. Jess and I walked Commercial Road in Morwell to see the sad state of affairs in the CBD. Every second shopfront is empty, and businesses are leaving at a rapid rate of knots because of the out-of-control antisocial crime. We met with Alfi and Graeme from Advance Morwell to talk about these issues and also Sandra from Viva Shoes, Donna from Dear Delilah and Morwell newsagent Ray Burgess to follow up with what is going on on the streets. We also heard from Michael, a local community member who has researched the impact of rooming houses in Morwell.
