Chris CREWTHER (Mornington) (09:49): On 5 July bus route 886 commenced between Mornington and Hastings, plus changes to route 784 to service around 2000 residents who had had no bus services. This followed years of determined advocacy by local residents, retirement village committees, other members of Parliament in this place and me. Before the 2022 election the Liberals committed to a Mornington-to-Hastings service and changes to local routes so buses would finally reach retirement villages and residents around Bungower and Racecourse roads. Labor at the time did not match these commitments. I continued pursuing them in Parliament, repeated representations to successive ministers and continued public advocacy until this government finally matched our commitments and committed to delivering these services. The result is about 2000 people now have services to and from Beleura Village, Peninsula Grange, Racecourse Grange, Mornington Gardens Holiday Village and St Macartan’s Parish Primary School for the first time. Route 886 between Mornington and Hastings is also providing 233 trips each week. I thank the residents who fought alongside me and others, particularly those at Peninsula Grange and Beleura Village. It was great to celebrate with them by taking a trip together on the service and getting a coffee at Mercetta. This is what strong local representation can achieve.
