Waste and recycling management

Meng Heang TAK (Clarinda) (19:12): (1714) My adjournment matter is for the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, and the action I seek is for the minister to provide the latest update on the deterrents at the truck parking bay on Westall Road, in Clayton South, to prevent the illegal dumping taking place there. Unfortunately, there has been a serious issue with illegal dumping at this location in my electorate. It is extremely disappointing. Household rubbish, commercial rubbish – all kinds of junk is being dumped here alongside this major arterial road, in full view of traffic coming past this site. I have been contacted by several constituents expressing their disappointment and calling for action. This site has been cleared several times now, and as soon as the junk has been cleared, it returns, and the community is calling for strong deterrents.

I echo the calls to hold illegal dumpers accountable for the mess they leave behind in our community. There are serious consequences for this kind of behaviour. Rubbish dumping and littering on public land are illegal, with a maximum penalty of close to $4 million for businesses and $800,000 for individuals or five years imprisonment, or both. The Allan Labor government has been cracking down on illegal dumping across Victoria. Together with the Minister for Environment we announced the $21.5 million in October last year to bolster the illegal dumping taskforce and deliver extra financial support for councils and public land managers to clear up and clean up illegally dumped waste. There is no excuse for illegal dumping, and we should be able to enjoy our shared public space and our roads free from dumped waste. I thank the minister for her assistance in getting this site cleared, and I am looking forward to her response.
