Ministers statements: housing
Sonya KILKENNY (Carrum – Attorney-General, Minister for Planning, Minister for Violence Reduction, Minister for Finance) (14:23): The Oxford dictionary defines a NIMBY as someone who says they support new development but opposes it when it is proposed anywhere near them.
Members interjecting.
The SPEAKER: The house will come to order. I would like to hear the Minister for Planning’s ministers statement.
Sonya KILKENNY: That definition sums up those opposite perfectly. While those opposite look for reasons to say no, the Allan Labor government is getting on with the job of delivering more homes for more Victorians. We reject nimbyism, we reject the anti-housing agenda that sits behind it –
Richard Riordan interjected.
The SPEAKER: Order! Member for Polwarth, this is your last warning.
Sonya KILKENNY: and we reject the idea that young Victorians should be locked out of housing because some people simply do not want to change. That is why in the past 12 months alone the Allan Labor government has approved more than 55,000 new homes across Victoria. That is 55,000 new homes in Kew, in Geelong, in Glen Waverley, in Bentleigh, in Albert Park, in Bayswater, in Melbourne, in Brighton, in Clarinda, in Ballarat and in many communities right across our state.
While we are approving homes, not everyone shares that ambition. Just two weeks ago the Liberal–National opposition and One Nation combined in the other place to vote against the Allan Labor government’s plans to deliver more homes for Victorians. They voted against more housing opportunities for young people. They voted against tackling the housing shortage. They voted against the homes Victorians need. Victorians deserve to know the truth. If you oppose more homes, Victorians need to know it. If you want to return to the failed status quo, Victorians deserve to know it. The Allan Labor government is standing up for more homes, more opportunity and a stronger Victoria.
