Constituency questions

Sandringham electorate

Brad ROWSWELL (Sandringham) (14:33): (1688) My constituency question is to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, and I ask: how will the government financially compensate local businesses, like the Flour House, who are being hung out to dry by the works at the Graham Road and Bay Road intersection at the moment? The Highett Common development in Highett has resulted in the developer commencing works on installing traffic signals at the Graham Road and Bay Road intersection. With access to Graham Road from the southern end now blocked off, local businesses are rightly ropeable about the effect that these works have had on their businesses. These businesses are having to cut staff and continue to pay rent and their bills while their income is being strangled. While the developer continues to profit from the sale of this project, local businesses suffer. They are beyond angry about the effect this closure has had so far on their customers, trade and livelihoods, yet the project will not be completed until early next year. I call on the government to ensure these businesses have real financial support and to work with the developer and local councils to help these businesses with that real support.
