Justin Polwarth
Brad BATTIN (Berwick) (10:31): Today I rise to honour a member of the Victoria Police force who is retiring: Justin Polwarth, 30318. I worked with Justin out in Dandenong, and Polly was fantastic. We recently had his retirement and reflected on his career, and it was a very interesting one, with 32 years in the job. He was asked why he joined and the answer was, quite simply, ‘Because my mate next to me is, so I’ll give it a go.’ One of his stories was going in to do his exam, and he was very, very honest about it. He just hoped the bloke next to him was smart enough, when he copied the exam, to ensure he could get in. When he did actually get in, he was one of the rare people in Victoria Police that was late to his first day on the job. He knocked on the door of the superintendent, and the superintendent opened up the door – these are words from Justin, so I do not get in trouble here. Polly says, ‘I’m here to report for my first day,’ and the superintendent goes, ‘No worries at all. That is a mediocre start to a mediocre career.’ After 32 years, who would have thought that that bloke could predict the future so well. Justin’s time in the Victoria Police force – Polly’s – was absolutely amazing. The one thing outside of his work as a detective at detective training school, protecting the community, is he was the person that every person in the police force knew that they could look to. They always say, ‘Who would you take into the trenches?’ Polly is one you would take with you. The people that were at that retirement spoke so highly of him, and one of them that did speak highly of him was ‘Riz’. We want to say too, to anyone at the Auburn Bowls Club, where we were at to do the function, if ‘Riz’ is still doing his speech now, just ring Yarra criminal investigation unit and we will make sure we come and pick him up, because he manages to speak for a hell of a long time.
