Nathan LAMBERT (Preston) (14:37): (1843) My question is for the Minister for Agriculture, and my question is: how is the Victorian government supporting wool producers to move away from outdated ways of managing flystrike? As you will be aware, Victoria already mandates pain relief for mulesing, but I ask this question on behalf of Andy Kondopoulos, a Preston resident who collected 165 signatures on a petition pointing out that the regulations do not specify exactly when that pain relief is administered and calling for multimodal analgesia and then a legislated shift to alternatives, including genetic selection. I should say that my father and my late grandfather Will McKenzie were both wool producers – sheep farmers – and I know that they only did crutching because they were up in the Mallee. As the member for Mildura will know, they do not need as much mulesing up in that part of the world, but I know if they were here, they would point out that a sheep dying from flystrike is a truly horrific thing to witness, and all good farmers would support any outcomes that stop that happening. We appreciate any information that the minister and her team can provide.
