Constituency questions

Broadmeadows electorate

Kathleen MATTHEWS-WARD

Broadmeadows electorate

Kathleen MATTHEWS-WARD (Broadmeadows) (14:33): (1839) My question is for the Minister for Police, and I ask: will the updated list of locations where police can deploy PSOs include Broadmeadows shopping centre? The Carroll Labor government has announced an additional 200 ‍PSOs across Victoria, and we know that PSOs in shopping centres work. Since the commencement of Operation Pulse there have been more than 1700 arrests made and over 3500 ‍charges laid. Retail theft is down 70 per cent, and 84 per cent of customers felt safer. PSOs at Broadmeadows station are doing a great job, as are the new community connectors, helping those who need extra support. With Labor’s record investment in police funding more than 3600 new officers, we now have the largest force in Australia. Bail refusals are at a record high, and we have seen a 70 ‍per cent increase in remand. Our new laws to crack down on crimes against customer-facing workers are making things even safer for both shoppers and workers. PSOs at Broadmeadows Central shopping centre will make it even safer and more pleasant to work, shop – (Time expired)
