Cheltenham East Primary School
Nick STAIKOS (Bentleigh – Minister for Housing, Building and Precincts, Minister for Homelessness, Minister for Seniors) (10:03): Happy 70th anniversary, Cheltenham East Primary School. Cheltenham East opened in 1956, the year of the Melbourne Olympics, which explains the school’s Olympic torch emblem. The first principal was Sir William Fry, a former mayor of Moorabbin and state member of Parliament, after whom Highett’s Sir William Fry Reserve was named. The current principal is Robert Ridgway, with whom I have worked very, very closely to improve the school. I was very proud back in May to secure $10.5 million in the budget for a major upgrade of Cheltenham East, and I am really pleased to report that an architect has recently been appointed to get this exciting project started. While Cheltenham East Primary School has been around for 70 years, the site that it sits on has a fascinating history that predates 1956. From the 1860s the Church of England common school 127 occupied the site, but it closed some years later. However, the development of local market gardens for housing made the reactivation of the land for educational purposes necessary. When Cheltenham East Primary School opened it had 226 students and just seven staff. But as enrolments grew, more classrooms were built, and it is these classrooms that we will now rebuild to secure a bright future for Cheltenham East Primary School. Happy 70th birthday.
