Middle East conflict
Gabrielle DE VIETRI (Richmond) (10:01): As bombs dropped on Palestine, this government made a choice to stand with Israel as it committed genocide. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are since dead, wounded and missing, and children have been subjected to unthinkable horrors. Despite hundreds of thousands rallying in the streets against these heinous war crimes, this government backed genocide every step of the way. They rolled out the red carpet for the President of Israel. They funded and showcased weapons and weapons parts made for Israeli forces, shipped off knowing that they would kill Palestinians. This government continued to support their so-called friendship with Israel over the protection of basic humanity, and there is no way they could claim they did not know. Week after week they shut down debate about the truth in Palestine and turn their backs on human rights. To the Labor MPs who think they care about Palestine but have stood by while their government have grovelled at Netanyahu’s feet and who have hidden in the long, dark shadow of their government’s complicity, shame on you. What could have been so important that you stayed silent? History will remember you.
