Constituency questions

Ovens Valley electorate

Tim McCURDY

Ovens Valley electorate

Tim McCURDY (Ovens Valley) (14:34): (1840) My question is to the Minister for Consumer Affairs, and it is on behalf of James Brogan in Yarrawonga. I ask: how will the Victorian government support communities like Yarrawonga who continue to be ripped off by collusion and illegal practices by the privately owned fuel stations in Yarrawonga? For years fuel in Yarrawonga has been 25 to 30 ‍cents higher than the surrounding areas of Cobram, Wangaratta and Rutherglen. The ACCC has told me previously that investigation into similar country towns in regional New South Wales can only prove that the fuel proprietors phone each other regularly, but they cannot prove collusion. That is a cop-out. Victoria’s new Servo Saver, which is supposed to assist in the price gouging, has only assisted fuel stations in Yarrawonga from having to physically drive down the road and compare their prices. They can do it from the comfort of their office chair without leaving their business. When people leave town to fuel up, they usually shop for groceries and other items, which means the small businesses miss out on trade. The Victorian government needs to assist communities like Yarrawonga from the daylight robbery that continues on a daily basis.
