Warrandyte electorate
Nicole WERNER (Warrandyte) (09:52): It has been the honour of my life to serve as the member for Warrandyte. I am the granddaughter of a World War II survivor, an illiterate peasant woman who, due to her family’s poverty, never got sent to school and to this day still cannot read or write. I am the daughter of working-class parents who migrated to Australia in search of a better life. My parents worked multiple jobs, cleaning toilets in factories and in manual labour, to get ahead and to achieve the great Australian dream of buying their first home. I married into a fifth-generation farming family from north-east Victoria, where we farm 2000 acres of sheep, wheat and canola. The farm was a side hustle for my father-in-law until he retired from policing after 36 years in the force. My husband, Fraser, helps run the family farm and is a small business owner in construction. All of these experiences anchor and drive me as a member of Parliament. It is why I am so passionate about fighting for working families, for battlers, for small business owners, for tradies, for young people and for every single Victorian looking to have a fair go. It is why I have called out the Labor government for their corruption. It is why when in this chamber Labor shouted me down I fired up and fought back, because I am here to serve the Victorian people. A good government gets the basics right. A good government respects taxpayers money, and a good government backs small business. Victorians can take heart because a good government is on its way. Under a Liberal–National government, Victoria will get the fresh start it needs.
