Anthony CIANFLONE (Pascoe Vale) (14:37): (1835) My constituency question is for the Minister for Roads and Road Safety. It is a very important question. Is it true that my electorate of Pascoe Vale may be home to some of the steepest residential streets in Melbourne, if not Victoria? Locally they are known amongst cyclists as the Gaffney Four – that is, Gaffney Street, Bolingbroke Street, Pardy Street and O’Hea Street. For generations these hills have been part of the character of Pascoe Vale, either climbed or flown down by local kids on bikes and used by families walking to and from school and home. Generations of motorists quickly learned the importance of a very good handbrake. Measurements undertaken by the Climbing Cyclist estimate maximum gradients of around 16 per cent for Gaffney Street, at 300 metres high; 20 per cent on Bolingbroke Street, at 200 metres high; 25 per cent on Pardy Street, at 200 metres high; and an extraordinary 30 per cent on O’Hea Street, at 200 metres high, prompting speculation that O’Hea may even be Melbourne’s steepest residential street and possibly the steepest in the world. Essentially, gradients like these make Parliament’s front steps very much feel like an escalator. I would really welcome and the community would welcome information to finally settle this great question and debate across our local community.
