Peter WALSH (Murray Plains) (10:18): There is an old adage that if you fix country roads, you save country lives. The roads in my electorate are an absolute disgrace, and it is appalling that this government has done nothing about fixing these roads. The tragedy on the Western Highway where that motorcyclist was killed should never, ever have happened, and more of that will come in the future unless the roads are fixed properly. That is why I look forward to a Liberal and Nationals government being elected and $5 billion being put into fixing our roads – fixing our roads properly. We have a particularly bad stretch of road between Kerang and Lake Charm on the Murray Valley Highway. Every two to three weeks they come out and fix it. It breaks up almost immediately. I do not know why country roads cannot be fixed properly. There has to be a better way. We put our ‘Fix this bloody road’ sign on the fence next to that pothole just to make sure the department might do something about it. But, no, what happens? They put a bit of hot mix in; it comes straight out again. You stand there and watch. It is so dangerous, and that is just repeated right across my electorate. We need a substantial investment in roads. We need them fixed properly. That is why we need the election of a Liberal and Nationals government – to make sure our roads are fixed properly and we save country lives.
