Mary-Anne THOMAS (Macedon) (10:37): I rise today to honour a dear friend and Labor Party stalwart Don Drummond, who died aged 92 in June of this year. Together with his late wife Sheila, Don was at the centre of the Woodend Labor Party branch, and their book-filled home was a place of lively conversations and meetings. Don’s remarkable knowledge of Labor history and policy was matched by his integrity and kindness. Don proudly had an ASIO file. He was our federal Ballarat candidate in 1958 and, despite a primary vote of 44.6 per cent, was done over in a dirty preference deal between the DLP and the Liberals. Don was an educator of distinction, a publisher and a proud family man. Don and Sheila enriched the cultural life of the Macedon Ranges as founding committee members of the Woodend Winter Arts Festival and through its Words and Ideas program, which brought so many thoughtful discussions and leading Australian writers to our community. Don believed in people, ideas and the power of community. He was much loved, and his contribution will endure in the organisations he strengthened, the friendships he nurtured and the ideas he encouraged. Farewell, comrade.
