Constituency questions

Preston electorate

Nathan LAMBERT

Preston electorate

Nathan LAMBERT (Preston) (14:35): (1777) My question is for the Minister for Roads and Road Safety. My question is: for local council intersections with a significant amount of pedestrian activity, what are the Victorian government’s recommendations regarding the choice between a roundabout and a raised intersection, and what is the best practice implementation of those formats? I ask this question particularly with respect to an intersection that I raised in May of last year, and that is the changed Hickford–Borrie streets intersection next to Reservoir Views Primary School. A school parent there, Christine Speziale, has now gathered 445 signatures asking council to undertake a review into the changes that they made there. It does seem that vehicles continue to go through that intersection very quickly, because the raised crossing is very shallow. It also seems that over a year later drivers are still confused by the pedestrian crossing markings and the stop line markings and knowing where they need to stop and give way. I do think it is important that we get these intersections right, particularly when they involve schoolchildren. Any information the minister can provide to assist a potential safety review would be greatly appreciated.
