Constituency questions

Brighton electorate

James NEWBURY (Brighton) (14:30): (1708) My constituency question is to the Premier, and I ask: when will the Premier explain why he ripped funding away from the needed structural repairs at Elwood Primary School? Elwood Primary is an exceptional school that has served our community since 1917. It is the beating heart of Elwood. With the school being 110 years old, its buildings are historical and now need maintenance. The school is a community, and the quality of education is exceptional, but the current Labor government has overlooked its infrastructure. There are now very serious structural issues with the building. The school’s heritage buildings are being held up by steel and concrete supports, cracks are widening and children are learning under scaffolding. On 14 January the then Minister for Education committed in writing:

… the department is continuing to work closely with the school to repair the structural damage … the forecast practical completion date is in the third quarter of 2026.

The works have not commenced, and the school has been advised that funding has been cut. This Premier has broken his promise to Elwood children.
