Bridget VALLENCE (Evelyn) (13:12): Criminal offending is at an all-time high under the Labor government. Genuine ‘adult crime, adult time’ laws are what Victorians are calling for and are what Victorians deserve to have safer communities. If you break bail, you should face jail. Victoria is in a crime crisis under the Labor government. Labor has let organised crime infiltrate government Big Build projects, costing through corruption at least $15 billion, and the government is refusing to hold a royal commission to follow the money and stop the rorts. Organised crime is now recruiting children to commit home invasions and firebombings, and machete attacks are still occurring. Young people have died. It is heartbreaking. People in my community are worried about their safety on the street and in their homes. Police are doing amazing work in difficult conditions, but the system is broken. Labor’s weak laws and revolving door bail system are putting dangerous offenders back on the street and continuing the cycle of crime. Criminal offending is at an all-time high under this Labor government. It is a disgrace. With a crime committed every 50 seconds in Victoria, our community deserves tougher bail and sentencing laws, thousands more police and investment in crime prevention initiatives. A strict one-strike bail rule that covers more crimes like burglary, arson, assault and attempted murder makes sense – serious consequences must prevail.
