Multicultural Victoria Amendment Bill 2026

Introduction and first reading

The SPEAKER: Order! Members will be removed from the chamber if they continue to interject. It is not acceptable to shout down any member on their feet.

Sonya KILKENNY: I move:

That I introduce a bill for an act to amend the Multicultural Victoria Act 2011 to establish Multicultural Victoria, to require certain public sector entities to acquire interpreting and translating services from VITS LanguageLoop and for other purposes.

Motion agreed to.

James NEWBURY (Brighton) (12:11): I seek a brief explanation of the bill.

Sonya KILKENNY (Carrum – Attorney-General, Minister for Planning, Minister for Violence Reduction, Minister for Finance) (12:11): This bill will deliver on recommendations made in Victoria’s multicultural review, led by George Lekakis AO and the expert advisory group, and commitments made in the government’s public response to the review. This includes the establishment of Multicultural Victoria, which will reset how government engages with Victoria’s multicultural and multifaith communities. Further, it will enable implementation of language services reforms, which includes enabling critical areas of government work to be assigned to VITS LanguageLoop.

Read first time.

Ordered to be read second time tomorrow.
