Colin BROOKS (Bundoora – Treasurer, Minister for Industrial Relations) (10:06): I rise today to recognise the Greensborough Tennis Club, a wonderful local club with a proud 103-year history right in the heart of our community. For more than a century the club has called the same site in Greensborough home. Today, with around 170 members, it continues to be a place where people can get involved, meet new people and of course enjoy their tennis. The club calls itself a friendly club, and that spirit is evident in its free social tennis sessions, which have helped to bring new members through the doors and grow its competition teams. I would also like to recognise Nick Reid, who has been a part of the Greensborough Tennis Club for the past 10 years, including five years on the committee. As president, Nick has played an important role in helping the club to continue to grow and embrace new opportunities, including the introduction of pickleball. One person who really embodies the community spirit of the club is Michael Collins. Michael coached at Greensborough Tennis Club for more than 40 years before retiring a couple of years ago, but retirement certainly has not kept him away. He remains on the committee and is still an active player in one of the club’s highest ranking teams. When the club began exploring pickleball ahead of its new courts, Michael embraced the challenge. Within just a few months he had become Victoria’s over-70s pickleball champion – a fantastic achievement. Sport has clearly been a family affair for the Collins family, with Michael’s wife Vicki also coaching for many years and their daughter Jackie Lacey now serving as the club’s current coach. Congratulations to Michael and everyone at Greensborough Tennis Club for the passion, friendship and volunteer spirit that have kept this club thriving.
