Van Viet Truong
Sarah CONNOLLY (Laverton) (15:35): I would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the tragic passing of Van Viet Truong, who was violently assaulted in Sunshine last weekend. For more than 30 years Viet was a familiar and cherished face in our local community operating Hong Hung Asian grocery store in the heart of Hampshire Road. I had the privilege of knowing Viet and visiting his business many times over the past couple of years. Viet was a kind, generous and humble man. He was the sort of person who quietly looked after others, not because he had to but because that was simply who he was. Whenever we spoke, he would proudly talk about his children and the pure joy that they brought him. The pride he had in his family was unmistakable. My heart goes out to Viet’s wife Lien and their two children. His loss is felt deeply, and the grief that our community is feeling is overwhelming. Over the last week the Premier and the Minister for Police have joined me in Sunshine on multiple occasions to meet with local traders and hear firsthand of their experiences and their concerns with respect to community safety. Our business community in Sunshine is grieving the loss of a man who was not only a respected trader but a friend, a mentor and a pillar of the Vietnamese community. Viet was not just a good Samaritan. He is a hero to our community in Sunshine. My message to people that would like to visit our community at this time is – (Time expired)
