Constituency questions

Morwell electorate

Martin CAMERON

Morwell electorate

Martin CAMERON (Morwell) (14:35): (1746) My question is to the Premier, and the information I seek is whether the Premier will admit that coal-fired power has a crucial role to play in securing Victoria’s energy grid. Labor has had 11 years to prepare for the transition away from coal-fired power, but repeated inaction and mismanagement of the grid means Victoria is in a precarious position. With the planned closure of Yallourn power station in 2028, the Victorian Auditor-General has stated the risk of a disorderly energy transition is now almost certain. The Auditor-General also says Labor’s current pipeline of generation and battery projects will not be enough to offset Yallourn’s closure from mid-2028. The loss of Yallourn’s power generation without significant alternative supply also means power bills will skyrocket, and Victorians already doing it tough with the cost of living will be in a further world of hurt.

The SPEAKER: Member for Morwell, I will give you a chance to rephrase your constituency question to be a question, not an action.

Martin CAMERON: The information that I seek is: when will the Premier admit coal-fired power has a crucial role to play in securing Victoria’s energy grid?
