Roma BRITNELL (South-West Coast) (10:36): The people of South-West Coast are asking a very simple question: how does this Victorian Labor government decide which roads get fixed? Because from where our community are sitting, the priorities simply do not make sense. Concerned residents, including Elise McKinnon, Rachael Batten and others, have formed Connecting Warrnambool because they are deeply concerned about the Hopkins Highway. Traffic has increased, roads have deteriorated and families and children face dangerous intersections, yet their concerns are seemingly ignored. The same frustration is being expressed across the electorate. In Port Fairy sections of the highway are significantly degraded, yet roadworks have been prioritised on the other side of Port Fairy, toward Portland, leaving locals wondering why the worst sections were not dealt with first. In Warrnambool, near the Shell service station, locals watched crews repair the right-hand lane when the potholes were actually in the left lane. Then there is Panmure. The community was told works could not proceed because winter had arrived. The equipment had been brought up and set up, then it was all packed up and taken away. Locals were told works could not be done until September because of winter conditions, yet just weeks later, in the heart of the same wet winter, roadworks proceeded near Port Fairy. Understandably, people are asking: what is the logic? What determines the priority? And why do the explanations seem so inconsistent? It is clear that Victoria needs a fresh start. This will only happen under a Liberal government. We have the solution. We have promised $5 billion to fix the roads properly and to eliminate potholes, because when the roads are as bad as they are in South-West Coast, patching does not work.
