 David LIMBRICK (South-Eastern Metropolitan) (23:40): (2821) My adjournment matter this evening is for the attention of the Premier. In 2018 the Victorian Auditor-General published a report on Victoria Police’s management of property and exhibits. Most people probably do not think about it, but Victoria Police has to store and manage tremendous amounts of property, from lost property to seized items, evidence and firearms, whether they are seized, related to a crime or surrendered for other reasons. There are statutory obligations on how they are supposed to audit and manage this property. It is important stuff. You have evidence related to criminal proceedings and dangerous items such as firearms. The bad news is that the audit results were terrible. The Victorian Auditor-General’s Office examined 15 audit reports from eight stations that they visited. Zero were compliant with their audit obligations, and only 6 per cent had audited more than three-quarters of their property. This report had eight recommendations for Victoria Police to improve the efficiency, accuracy and accountability of their property management systems. There does not seem to be any update on the record, though. Did Victoria Police update their property management systems, or has the situation improved? This is important, as the Parliament has passed laws updating aspects of our firearms regulations. Is Victoria Police fit for purpose, or is the situation worse than at the last public audit? My request to the Premier is to write to the Victorian Auditor-General and request they audit Victoria Police’s management of property and exhibits.
