Avila College
Matt FREGON (Ashwood) (13:00): I was asked to drop in to Avila College the other week by a student representative council to discuss the provision of feminine sanitary products in schools. I met with a group of student leaders who were very passionate and put forward the notion that all disposable sanitary products should be available in bathrooms as a matter of course, and on this we wholeheartedly agree. It was very pleasing to see that we now have open conversations about menstruation and related social policies.
Growing up in a chemist shop, it never seemed like a big deal, but it is only recently that we are having open conversations about menstruation and policies for the provision of these products in place, and in that regard I thank the Minister for Women, the Minister for Health and the Minister for Education for their ongoing work in providing these products in schools and hospitals. There is always more to do, and I think there will be a day when these products are in every bathroom everywhere as a matter of course. Thanks to Sienna, Amy, Mia-Bridgette, Amanthi, Sophie, Sameen and Cheyenne and their mentor teachers Ms Stephens and Ms Savaglio for organising and facilitating a great discussion. With young women like these making great arguments and getting involved, I think the future is in very good hands.
